DROWNING POOL Keeps it Slamming For Soldiers
August 6, 2007DROWNING POOL bassist Stevie Benton has penned a guest blog for Headbanger's Blog about the significance of his experiences performing for the USO. Read it at this location.
DROWNING POOL will participate in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon (August 7) at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles with members of the non-profit organization Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). The event is being held to discuss the current crisis for U.S. soldiers coming back from both countries and facing severe health care issues upon their return home. The Texas-based band is campaigning to urge Congress to expand mental health care for returning troops and has launched a web site and petition about the issue at thisisforthesoldiers.org.
The band will be joined at the press conference by IAVA's Todd Bowers and Billboard managing editor Tamara Conniff.
DROWNING POOL's new album, "Full Circle", comes out on Tuesday.
The set includes the band's current single, "Soldiers", which was inspired by its trip last year to the Middle East to perform for U.S. soldiers. Benton told The Pulse of Radio that the group had wanted to visit the troops and finally got a chance. "A DJ in Dallas was going and she was taking a band with her, and then I guess at the last minute that band kind of got cold feet and canceled," he said. "So she called us up at the last minute and asked us to go, and even though we had plans to start recording at the time, the opportunity came up to start going to the Gulf and doing all these USO tours. We just couldn't pass that up. Probably the highlight of our career to this point."
DROWNING POOL recently announced that 50 cents of each ticket sale from its current tour is going to IAVA, with another 50 cents going to the USO. The trek stops in Great Falls, Montana on Thursday (August 9).
